Nine HoopsByUgland Top 20 squads highlight Nike Extravaganza field

The 21st Nike Extravaganza, hosted by Santa Ana Mater Dei high school, begins Friday evening at 4 p.m. with L.A. Windward and San Juan Capistrano JSerra kicking things off. There are 12 boys games over the two-day event with nine of those teams being in the most recent HoopsByUgland.com SoCal Top 20. The marquee match-up on Friday is No. 5 Mater Dei against one of the best teams in the state of Arizona, Phoenix Shadow Mountain. The Matadors are led by a pair of Bibby’s. Mike Bibby, the former University of Arizona and NBA star, is the head coach, while his son, Michael Bibby, leads the team in scoring at 19.1 points per game. Shadow Mountain has two more players to watch in senior guard J.J. Rhymes, who is averaging 18.3 points and 6.1 rebounds per game this season, and freshman Jaelen House, the son of former NBA player Eddie House, who is contributing nine points per game this year. The headline games Saturday night are the 7:15 p.m. tilt between Lonzo Ball-led Chino Hills - the No. 1 team in the country - and Las Vegas Bishop Gorman - one of the best teams in Nevada. Chino Hills remains unbeaten (23-0) heading into a Baseline League road game Friday night at Upland, and Gorman, which has a record of 18-6, has enough talent on paper to make things interesting. Gonzaga-bound McDonald’s All-American big man Zach Collins and blue-chip junior Charles O’Bannon, Jr. must have electric performances for Gorman to hang with the Huskies. Mater Dei and T.J. Leaf-led El Cajon Foothills Christian cap things off Saturday night at 8:45 p.m. Leaf, the McDonald’s All-American heading to UCLA, has been absolutely dominant this season with averages of 29.3 points, 12.4 rebounds, 5.4 assists and 3.1 blocks per game. The presence of Leaf will pose one of the biggest one-on-one tests Mater Dei and Oregon-bound forward M.J. Cage has seen in his high school career.
