It's a City Section-centric semifinals at Pac Shores

REDONDO BEACH, Calif. — The City Section rules at Pac Shores. Well, almost. Three of the four teams to advance to Friday’s semifinals at the 65th annual Dijon Thompson Pac Shores tournament - Narbonne, Westchester and Birmingham - represent the Los Angeles City Section while the fourth, Eastvale Roosevelt, is of the Southern Section variety. Roosevelt defeated Oak Park with a second half surge and another huge performance from Matt Mitchell to advance. Westchester edged Poly in overtime thanks to big performances from a couple of talented sophomores in Jordan Brinson and Jeremiah Turley. Narbonne had to fend off Redondo Union and Ryse Williams’ furious second half rally to complete the overtime win. Gauchos junior Kendall Frey got the best of that shootout. Birmingham found itself in a tight one with Santa Margarita, but pulled out the victory thanks to 57 points combined from Devante Doutrive, Deschon Winston and Devonaire Doutrive. Here’s how the semifinal schedule looks for Friday: Birmingham and Narbonne will face-off at 6:30 p.m. Westchester and Roosevelt are the nightcap at 8:00 p.m. Tuesday Scores and Recaps Quarterfinals Lake Balboa Birmingham 76, Santa Margarita 73 The Patriots “Big Three” of Devante Doutrive (22), Deschon Winston (19) and Devonaire Doutrive (16) combined for 57 points as Birmingham (2-0) defeated the Eagles of Santa Margarita (1-1) to move on to the Pac Shores semifinals. Birmingham trailed by four after one, 22-18, but outscored Santa Margarita 26-11 in the second to take an 11-point lead at the break. The second 16 minutes saw multiple ties and lead changes and a mid-range jumper from sophomore forward Jake Kyman gave the Eagles a 70-69 advantage with 70-69 lead. Birmingham’s Mark Boland answered with a quick 3-pointer, giving the Patriots a 72-70 lead. With 19.3 seconds left and Birmingham clinging to a 75-73 lead, Devante Doutrive rebounded an airball 3-point attempt by Winston and drew a foul on Margarita’s Jordan Guest. Doutrive hit one of two from the line and Kaden Rasheed missed a potential game tying 3-pointer from the corner. Rasheed scored 17 for Santa Margarita, Kyman had 16 and Adrease Jackson added 13. Harbor City Narbonne 64, Redondo Union 57 (OT) The Gauchos (2-0) sped out to a massive halftime advantage, 39-22, over the host Sea Hawks behind the scoring of junior shooting guard Kendall Frey and all-around team defensive effort. Redondo (1-1) trailed by 11 at the end of three, but battled back in the fourth quarter thanks to cool, calm and collected Loyola Marymount-signee Ryse Williams. Williams scored nailed four 3-pointers and scored 14 points in the fourth quarter, including a triple from the top of the key to cut Narbonne’s lead to one with 15.5 seconds left and another from a similar location as time expired to send the game into overtime all tied at 52. The Gauchos locked up defensively in the overtime period to secure their spot in Friday’s semifinals. Frey led all scorers with 25 points. Psalm Maduakor finished with 14 points and 15 rebounds for Narbonne. Williams scored 21 points for Redondo. Westchester 77, Long Beach Poly 72 (OT) After an ugly first half, which ended with Westchester holding a 26-22 lead, the Comets and Jackrabbits picked things up offensively during the second 16 minutes of play. Poly (1-1) took a 61-55 lead with 1:40 to play on back-to-back buckets from seniors Myles Johnson and Zafir Williams, but sophomore guard Jordan Brinson answered with a driving layup, foul, and free throw to cut the Jackrabbits lead to three, 61-58, with 1:30 to go. Poly kept that three-point advantage intact before Westchester sophomore Jeremiah Turley hit a corner 3-pointer, his first basket of the game, tying the game at 67 with a couple of seconds on the clock to send the game to overtime. A layup from Turley and two free throws from Brinson gave Westchester (2-0) a 75-72 advantage with 9.5 seconds left. Jackrabbits coach Shelton Diggs burned back-to-back timeouts to draw up a nice play to give Williams a good look at a potential game tying 3-point attempt, but Williams couldn’t connect. Brinson finished with 23 points for Westchester, while senior small forward Luis Rodriguez added 17 points and nine rebounds. Williams scored 25 for Long Beach Poly with 23 of those coming in the second half. Eastvale Roosevelt 62, Oak Park 50 Cal State Fullerton-bound forward Matt Mitchell was too much for Oak Park to handle as he scored 26 points to lead the Mustangs to a semifinal appearance. Roosevelt (2-0) led by three at the half over Oak Park (1-1) who needed all of Riley Battin’s 30 points to stay within striking distance. Jemarl Baker came alive in the second half, scoring 10 of his 15 points in the third and fourth quarters to bury the Eagles. Consolation Bracket Temecula Rancho Christian 56, Rolling Hills Estates Peninsula 53 Sophomore forward Solomon Davis made two free throws with 8.3 seconds left to help Rancho Christian earn its first win. Cerritos Gahr 64, Studio City Harvard-Westlake 57 American University-signee Marvin Bragg scored 33 points to lead the Gladiators. Freshmen Mason Hooks and Johnny Juzang finished with 20 and 19 points, respectively. The Wolverines played without standout shooting guard Cassius Stanley for the second-straight game. Lynwood 62, Mayfair 59 Denzel Williams earned player of the game honors for the Knights with his 12 points, while Kyle Small took the nod for the Monsoons with his dozen points. Inglewood 73, Compton Dominguez 58
